The goat pass on scheme is as follows: when a person has been able to fill out the requirements to receive a goat (build a stable pen, have food accessible for the goat, etc) they are added to a list of beneficiaries for the summer and we interns go inspecting their situation. If they receive a goat closer to the end of the summer (usually end of July), it is their responsibility to go on and eventually when this goat has kids (baby goats) they are to either pass one goat on to another group member or sell it and give the money to the groups revolving fund (basically every group has a bank like thing called a revolving fund in which they can borrow money (usually to pay their kids' school fees) or use some of its funds to buy the group things like plastic chairs, mattresses etc).
Now comes the part that I need you beautiful people for!!! Our 2016 VWB interns are needing to raise money to buy goats for this summer. Our goat pass out date has been set for July 20th, 2016. A goat usually costs about $50 Canadian (the form to fill out is in CAD even though it doesn't say so... Sorry for that), but you can donate as much as you wish! Every little bit helps. I believe last year they gave out around 38 goats and our project is greatly impacted by how much we can raise. Here is the link:
Vets Without Borders Goat Pass on Project has been going for about 10 years in Uganda and I am happy to say I am now helping out too. If anyone has any questions or concerns I would be happy to answer them over email! I'll probably post this to Facebook at some point when I find the time! Busy Busy Busy!
A NOTE FROM MOM, MABEL KOTCHEA: Any donations made on behalf of Kyla, she will match up to a $1000.00!! You can email Mom Mabel at her work email. Contact Reception at 250.774.7257 if you don't know her email. Amazing support! Keep up the great work, Kyla! We can't wait to hear more from your journey and work!
I cannot post her work email here due to a high level of spam/security breaches that may result.
Congratulations Mr. Zakary Myers from Chalo School's Grade 2 Class!
On June 8, 2016 Fort Nelson First Nation member Zakary Myers, son of Tammy (Michel) and Owen Myers, walked across the Vancouver Island University's stage to receive his degree in education. He took the time to honor his Fort Nelson First Nation roots by giving a shout-out to the Chalo students in grade 2, where he did his last practicum only months prior. As you can see in the video, they're thrilled and excited to be on the big screen - what an amazing thing for them to be witnessing! Way to go, Zak...ahem, I mean, Mr. Myers. We wish you well in your teaching career, Zak.
Thank you to Kayla Helget for the use of her video.

Individuals can apply for up to $20,000 for post-secondary education, training and certification, and cultural, traditional and language knowledge building in addition to programs aimed at healing and reconciliation. The deadline for applications is June 24, 2016.
